Description:

Chumbe Island Coral Park is an award winning conservation resort located off Zanzibar at the center of one of the most spectacular coral gardens in the world. Accommodation is something special, what Robinson Crusoe could only have dreamt about! The bungalows are so brilliantly designed that they provide both privacy and a sense of freedom of living in the open. The whole of Chumbe Island is a nature reserve and you may explore its beauties either under the competent guidance of our park rangers or at your leisure. Activities include snorkeling, nature walks, climbing the 131 steps to the top of the Chumbe Lighthouse (built in 1904 by the Sultan of Zanzibar and the British), relaxation and more. As a Marine Protected Area the focal aim of the Park Project is to preserve Chumbe Island's exceptional environment. Therefore, accommodation is based on the state-of-the-art of eco-architecture and eco-technology. If you seek an eco-friendly holiday in one of the most beautiful, relaxing and unspoiled locations to be found, we invite you to visit our website for more detailed information.

This activity can only be arranged if the weather allows. Local Attractions:

Chumbe offers the most pristine and colorful coral reefs you'll find on the East Coast with over 200 species of coral providing a sanctuary for more than 400 species of colorful fish. To protect these coral reefs, diving is not permitted in the marine park. The reef is shallow enough to see everything very clearly with a mask, snorkel and fins. SNORKELING ON CHUMBE REEF SANCTUARY is a lifetime experience that you are not supposed to miss. There is also a coral-rag forest which is home to the endangered Ader's duiker, giant coconut crabs, hermit crabs and a variety of bird species. Knowledgeable guides will take you on daily snorkeling and forest tours.

THE BEACH - AND SWIMMING ON CHUMBE ISLAND. Chumbe always has the nice small beach for you to swim when the tide is right. During neap tides the tidal range is minimal, making swimming possible for nearly all of the day. At very low tides a long sand bar (that remains constant) is exposed at the north point of the island, stretching out for about 1.5 km out to sea, providing a beautiful setting for a walk.

Getting There:

Chumbe Island is a small coral marine park located south-west of Stone Town with access restricted to 14 people. The boat to Chumbe leaves in the morning from Mbweni Ruins Hotel at 10h00 and takes about half an hour to get to the island.
